The Relevance of the Resurrection
by pastor Carlos Castaneda
Easter is here and it is sad that people all over the country are more excited
about the bunny and eggs than the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. As with
the majority of holidays it has become another opportunity to make money. But we
know better. Resurrection gives hope to all of us. It gives reassurance that we
are accepted by God the Father through Him. The core foundation for Christians
all over the world rests on the fact of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Hank
Hanegraaff writes, “The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the greatest feat in the
annals of human history. It is the very ‘capstone in the arch of Christianity.’
Without it, all else crumbles. When we fully comprehend the significance of
resurrection, our lives will be revolutionized. Without resurrection, there is
no hope. Indeed without resurrection, there would be no Christianity.” (from
Christian Research Report, Vol.13, Issue 2, May 2000). We need to come to a
conclusion today that the resurrection of Jesus Christ is more than a fairy
tale, is more than a legend and more than a religious ritual. Billy Graham once
said: “There is more evidence that Jesus rose from the dead than there is that
Julius Caesar ever lived or that Alexander the Great died at the age of
thirty‐three.” Paul, in the 15th chapter of his letter to the Corinthians,
explains that if the resurrection didn’t take place then our faith is in vain;
there is no hope for us. If that is the case, our sins wouldn’t be forgiven yet.
But he also reaffirms that Jesus did indeed rise. Without Jesus there was no way
to get into God’s Kingdom. The Word tells us that flesh and blood cannot inherit
the kingdom of God (1 Cor. 15:50). We needed a Savior, but not just any Savior,
we needed a perfect one. In other words, if Jesus came and died for our sins but
there was no resurrection, then that would mean that the Father had not accepted
the sacrifice. I don’t think there would be any church claiming that Jesus is
the Way. Remember what John the Baptist said in John 1:29, "Look, the Lamb of
God, who takes away the sin of the world!” He refers to Him as a Lamb because of
the necessary sacrifice, but also he says the one who takes away the sin because
His sacrifice was going to be accepted by God and the proof of that was His
resurrection. As Paul declares to the Corinthians, “if Jesus did not rise then
we are still in our sins”. In simple words His resurrection makes our salvation
possible. Romans 4:25 says, “He was delivered over to death for our sins and was
raised to life for our justification.” This article is not long enough to talk
about resurrection and all its accomplishments, but at least I want to make a
point. We all know that we are saved by faith. The Word says that whoever
believes in Him (Jesus Christ) shall not perish but have eternal life. To
believe in Him is not only to acknowledge that He existed or that He exists. To
believe in Him is also to believe in everything that He said, and to do the
things that He said that we should do. In other words, when we believe in Him we
need to believe everything that He says in His Word, and the resurrection gives
the opportunity together with the evidences that we don’t have a blind faith.
Resurrection is more than a celebration. Resurrection is proof that we are
accepted in the kingdom through Him. It is proof that He is God. It is proof
that we are going to have a body just like Him. It is proof that we have a place
with Him. It is proof that all that He said is true. It is proof that we are
co‐heirs with Him. Jesus is who He claims He is ‐ the Way, the Truth and the
Life! Our Lord changed history more than two thousand years ago. But better than
that He changed our lives as well. As a result, we have the hope of one day
being raptured or resurrected by Him and to obtain a new body just like His. Is
resurrection relevant? I think so! HE IS RISEN! Hallelujah!!!
